My Best Friend is Gay
by Victor Thomas
Chapter 15
"I'm not sure if this is the best way to do it," I said.
"What makes you an expert on coming out?" Valerie asked.
"My best friend happens to be gay."
"That makes you an expert in what way?" she asked.
"Well, it doesn't, but…" I said.
She smiled and put her fingers on my lips.
"Thanks for being worried, but I'm going to be okay," she said. "If things don't go well, I have a big brother who will stand up for me, but everything will be fine. You'll see."
Before I could object, she and Emma walked toward the kitchen. She looked back at me.
"Are you coming?" she asked.
I shook my head and followed.
"There you are," mom said as we entered. "Supper is almost ready. Everyone have a seat."
The table was set and a big bowl of potato salad and another of French fries were waiting. Mom took the last of the fish she was frying out of the cast iron skillet, placed then on a platter and handed them to dad, who took some and passed it to Emma.
We passed the platter and bowls until everyone's plate was full. Valerie and Emma seemed very calm considering the situation, although Mary gazed at her little sister as if she suspected something was up.
Valerie and Emma chatted pleasantly with the family as we ate. Emma had spent a lot of time in our home in recent months. She'd even helped mom bake Christmas cookies. It was almost like having another sister, which wasn't exactly what I needed, but I was happy for Valerie.
My littlest sister waited until everyone was finished with their chocolate pie before she said, "I have something I want to tell everyone, well everyone except Philip. He already knows. I have two somethings in fact."
I felt butterflies in my stomach. It was surprising there was room for them in there considering how much I'd eaten.
This is it. Please let this go well.
"I am a lesbian and Emma is my girlfriend."
Mary dropped her fork and it clanged on her plate. Mom's eyes widened, but dad only raised an eyebrow.
"Wow," Mary finally said.
Mom looked at me. I nodded and smiled.
"Well, that's… that is…" Mom looked back and forth between Valerie and Emma, who were now holding hands. Mom smiled. "I'm very glad you told us, Valerie, and Emma… well, I can't think of anyone better for my daughter."
"Thanks," Emma said, grinning.
"Dad?" Valerie asked.
"I love you kiddo," dad said. "I want you to be happy."
"I am, dad."
Valerie looked at Mary.
"I love you, brat," Mary said.
Valerie stuck out her tongue.
"I told you it would be fine," Valerie said, looking at me.
I grinned. I was very relieved her coming out had gone so well.
